The 5-lakes hike at the Gotthard Pass is one of the most beautiful hikes around the Gotthard massif. Hikers get to experience the magnificence of the Gotthard up close with every step they take. This walk is truly life-affirming, even if the weather doesn't play along. It is especially when fog abounds and the sky is overcast that the Gotthard sometimes exerts its special appeal.

Directions

The hike starts at the St Gotthard Hospice. The first three kilometres lead across flat terrain, towards the northwest. The ascent begins at the foot of the Lake Lucendro dam. As soon as you reach lake level, the route turns in a northerly direction. After 4.5 kilometres, you will arrive at Lake Orsino.

The path turns to the south-west as it passes through a high Alpine mountain landscape, then goes alongside Lake Orsirora and on to the Gatschola-Lücke. You will reach the Gatschola-Lücke after 2.5 hours of walking. Here, the vista to the North opens up to embrace the entire Alpine world. A stunningly beautiful spot for a picnic.

Having rested well, the route continues downhill and southwards. Hikers will pass two larger and several smaller lakes as they return to Lake Lucendro. The walk down offers a further opportunity to enjoy the Alpine air at a final stop before tackling the descent to the Gotthard.
