Spellbinding Alpine PassesLocated directly at the foot of the Gotthard pass, at 1493 m above sea level, and in the middle of the Ursern valley.
Holiday apartments as well as group accommodation are ideal for a summer stay at the foot of the Gotthard or in winter for holidays in the snow. The village is a good starting point for, among other things, pass rides in summer and cross-country skiing in winter and was officially named one of the most beautiful Swiss villages in January 2023.
The last village before crossing the Gotthard to the south enjoyed great attention during the muleteer period. The name itself, Hospental, comes from the Latin "hospitale" for hostel. Tolls were raised and the locals braved storms and survived war campaigns which took them north over the Gotthard. Like in 1799, for example, when the Russian general Suworow took on Napoleon's troops. The village centre of Hospental is worth a visit, as the houses still date from the flourishing times and create a harmonious village image. The fortified tower, which dates from the 13th century, is also characteristic of the landscape. This is one of the reasons that Hospental was officially named one of the most beautiful Swiss villages in January 2023.
Zumdorf also belongs to the community of Hospental. It is not only the smallest village in the Andermatt Holiday Region, but in all of Switzerland. Only four people live in Zumdorf all year round. Hospental itself has 186 inhabitants.
