The stone sculpture welcomes travellers, visitors and locals to Andermatt and the Ursern Valley. It stands in the middle of a roundabout that is encountered immediately upon exiting the Schöllenen Gorge and points the way into the village, the valley or the new Andermatt Reuss holiday village.
The stone sculpture symbolises Andermatt’s transformation, combining old with new and uniting the near and the far. The sculpture was commissioned as a new landmark for the mountain village by Egyptian investor Samih Sawiris (Andermatt Swiss Alps).
The artist and his work
Ugo Roninone, who was born in Brunnen and now lives in New York, is an internationally renowned artist. His oeuvre encompasses installations, drawings, painting and films. With its impressive size and simultaneous simplicity, the “Human Nature” stone sculpture demonstrates the mountains’ elemental force. The stone stack seems to be a matchstick man turned into stone. Here in Andermatt, it becomes one with the surrounding Alps.
