The tower of the lords of Hospental is the most striking construction in Hospental. Thanks to its elevated situation, the tower is clearly visible from several directions and is thus a shaping feature of the Ursern Valley’s landscape.
History
The tower is presumed to have been built in the 13th century, on account of the dating of the timber in the masonry. The lords of Hospental are the supposed patrons.
It is known that the tower was a residential tower for a long time, but it has not been lived in since the 15th century. The ruin is well-preserved and a moat in the form of a slight hollow can still be recognised on the western side.
Another perspective
The tower is clearly visible from many places in the valley, but an ascent to the fortified tower is just as rewarding. From there, there is a comprehensive, impressive view of the Ursern valley and of the village of Hospental, which was officially named one of the most beautiful Swiss villages in January 2023.
With the «Free view from and to the tower of Hospental» project of the Ursern Corporation, the landmark of Hospental will be made accessible to the public from 21 May 2022. There is a viewing platform and four intermediate platforms in the tower, accessible via steps.
