Spellbinding Alpine PassesSteam, loud hissing and the locomotive’s rhythmic noise.
The Furka steam railway offers a travel adventure through a mighty mountain landscape: the trip takes around two hours on carefully restored vintage trains from Realp (Uri) to Oberwald (Valais) or vice versa.
Travel route
The steam locomotive climbs up from Realp towards the mountains along the roaring Furkareuss. Sedately it travels across the Wiler bridge, through the three Alt Senntumstafel tunnels and across the famous Steffenbach bascule bridge. It takes water on board at the first stop in Tiefenbach. Once the steam boiler is full, the journey continues through blooming Alpine meadows. Puffing rhythmically, the traction vehicle with its railway carriages crosses the Steinstafel viaduct.
That is where an extended stop on the Furka follows, at 2163 m above sea level. Next, the train rolls, without the aid of cogwheels, towards Valais through the almost two kilometre-long summit tunnel. At the Muttbach-Belvédère stop, the train combo begins its actual descent on the track section that has a downward gradient of up to 11.8%. The Rhone glacier, showing itself between snow-covered peaks, provides a spectacular view.
After a stop in Gletsch (1762 m above sea level), the journey continues to Oberwald. In Gletsch, passengers can change to the lines of PostAuto Schweiz AG.
